Mountain Ash (Sorbus Acuparia) is a very hardy native tree. Otherwise known as the Rowan tree, it is renowned for its large clusters of white flowers in summer. In autumn it produces red berries that ripen from August to October and so supports many bird species. It can thrive on windy and exposed sites where other trees do not. Therefore this makes it a popular choice for Irish gardens. Mountain Ash is a deciduous tree that likes well drained soils and can grow well in shallow soils. The tree trunk is slender and cylindrical and reaches up to 40 cm in diameter, The size of a Mountain Ash after 20 years can be up to 8 metres high and 4 metres wide.
