Tree Fern (Dicksonia Antarctica)

Price range: €250.00 through €400.00

Tree Fern (Dicksonia Antarctica), is a spectacular tree fern native to eastern Australia, ranging from south-east Queensland, coastal New South Wales and Victoria to Tasmania. Dicksonia’s have large, dark green, roughly-textured fronds that spread in a canopy of 3-6 metres in diameter. The fronds are borne in flushes, with fertile and sterile fronds often in alternating layers. The “trunk” of this fern is merely the decaying remains of earlier growth of the plant and forms a medium through which the roots grow. Believe it or not the fern grows just 3.5 to 5 cm per year!

Tree Ferns strongly resent drought or dryness at the roots, and do best in moist soil. It is a very long living tree when compared to many other plants. Dicksonia antarctica grows best in areas of rainfall of over 1,000 mm per year so they can really thrive in Ireland!! They are hardy to about -6 degrees so care is needed in hard frosts.

We have some fantastic specimens available to inspect at the nursery or to purchase online.
