Arbutus Unedo - otherwise known as the ‘Killarney Strawberry Tree' is a beautiful native evergreen tree that produces edible strawberry like fruits that are extremely bitter! It’s an unusual tree that gives great winter colour. Arbutus unedo grows slowly to around 5 metres tall but has been known to grow up to 15 metres.
The leaves are green and glossy on the upper side, dull on the underside, with a serrated a serrulated margin. Flowers are white, bell-shaped, and flower from a reddish hanging panicle in autumn. They are pollinated by bees, and have a mild sweet scent.
The fruit is a red berry, spherical in shape with a rough surface. It matures in about 12 months, in autumn, at the same time as the next flowering.
The name unedo is attributed to the meaning "I eat only one" due to the bitter taste of the fruit.
Our Strawberry Trees are supplied at approximately 3 foot high in a large pot.
