It bears a shimmering white bark, which peels each year to reveal a fresh layer beneath. Its oval, dark green leaves turn gold in autumn before falling.

The Latin utilis means useful and refers to the many uses of the tree. The white, paper-like bark peels each year to reveal a fresh layer beneath. In ancient times it was used to write scriptures and texts. Nowadays, the bark is widely used for packaging, roof construction and more. Himalayan Birch wood is used in bridge construction and more widely for firewood. The foliage is used for fodder. Parts of the tree have also been used in traditional medicine.
It is a deciduous tree. It's dark green leaves turn gold in autumn before falling. It looks well planted in a group with other birches. The Himalayan Birch likes well drained soil and is very suited to Irish conditions.
