Copper Beech (Fagus Sylvatica Purpurea) makes an excellent hedge. Its foliage turns coppery red in spring while it has outstanding colour during summer. Like its sister plant (beech) it can hold many of its leaves during winter.

Instantly recognisable for its deep purple tones, Copper Beech Hedges are an alternative to Green Beech. The foliage transforms into a deep purple hue during summer. Although it is considered a deciduous hedge, many of its leaves turn brown and are retained for winter months. Copper beech hedges are suitable as a year-round hedge screen. They should be planted 3 to the metre for a single row and 5 to the metre for a double row. They are suitable for most soil types as long as it is moist but well drained. Copper Beech hedging grows at a medium rate of about 1 foot per year. Grown from seed, the colours can vary slightly so some foliage will be almost black in colour, whereas others will be a brighter. Therefore if you are aiming for colour uniformity, it is worth buying a few extra plants to remove any rogues!
