The native Downy Birch (Betula Pubescens) has a distinctive silver/white bark which provides excellent winter interest.  Birch trees are fast growing and can therefore become quite large in a relatively short space of time. Leaves are oval with a pointed tip and finely serrated edges that turn yellow in autumn. Downy birch is a native tree to Ireland and can be grown on damp sites.
